I had a bit of free time on my hands as I was on break for a few hours from work. I therefore used this time to get in a few shots at the Canal as I have been wanting to return for some time now. I set up shop with my D7000, nifty 50mm, tripod and polarising filter and took more or less around 120 shots. What a great evening it was.

Through the passage of time

What a cheap way to travel, using the Abra to get from one part of the Creek to another. One trip cost approximately $0.30 USD, can you believe it? 15 years ago this was one of the main means of transport within Dubai for many people heading to and from work. However with the advent of the metro and a highly improved transportion system it isn’t used as much now, nonetheless, it is a must see whilst in Dubai as it’s still one of the best ways to reach the Old Souq.

After weeks of making plans of a trip to the Palm Jumeirah, I was finally able to make the time and get to shooting. I arrived around 20:00hrs to a relatively empty boardwalk then set my gear up to shoot. I travelled quite light; Nikon d7000, 50mm 1.8, Sigma 105mm 2.8 and my tripod. In total I spent around 2 hours firing away, switching between lens and using various compositions and in the end I managed to capture this image, one which I am quite happy and contented with. Feel free to leave your comments!

I am quite a big fan of Henri Cartier Bresson so his style and philosophy was the main reason for me shooting this particular shot. In order to be as inconspicuous as possible, I made sure I had my camera settings already set from the time I saw this  guy walking coming towards me. After that I kept the camera just above my hip and when the time was right fired the shutter away, thus capturing that “spur of the moment-type” shot. I particularly like the way he is framed between the two other men giving that ‘ frame within a frame ‘ setting. His intense concentration also adds to the emotion and feel of the photo.

The amazingly talented Marinos Kosmas, Head Pastry Chef  of Morah Restaurant in the JW Marriott Hotel, Business Bay, Dubai. What a cool guy….. just don’t get on his bad side.

Absolutely loving my new Sigma 105mm 2.8. Quite a sturdy and well built lens, doesn’t feel cheap at all. Can be used for both macro or portraits, whichever suits you best.

I recently bought a  tripod and wanted to experiment with slow shutter speeds and motion at nights so hence the inspiration for this shot. Shutter speed was around 10 seconds to create that blur of the ‘waterfall’, against the backdrop of the towers and the bright street lights, this image was a personal favourite of mine. Finished with a high contrast black and white edit in lightroom.
